While searching, he liked a place named Girwa surrounded by Aravalli hills from all sides. Then he built a palace named Moti Mahal on a hill at this place and established the city.
This palace is still present in the form of ruins on Moti Magri on the banks of Fatehsagar Lake in Udaipur. This incident is said to have happened on Akshaya Tritiya in 1553 AD.
After this, whenever he got time, Maharana Udai Singh used to come to this Moti Mahal and brainstorm about the development of the city. Once Maharana Udai Singh went to a nearby hill in search of hunting.
On this hill, he found a sadhu Premgiri Goswami doing penance by lighting a fire. When Maharana met him, he talked about establishing a city by building a palace at this place.
Maharana Udai Singh accepted the sadhu's advice and started building a palace on that top of the hill. This happened on Akshaya Tritiya in 1559 AD.
Even today, the fire of sadhu Premgiri is present in the palace built by Maharana Udai Singh in the City Palace, whose blessings are taken by the members of the royal family on special occasions.
Being the residence of Maharanas of Mewar, a lot of development took place in the City Palace and its surroundings but due to lack of maintenance, Moti Mahal turned into ruins.
